Frederic Remington (American, 1861 - 1909)
Teaching a Mustang Pony to Pack Dead Game, c. 1890
Oil on canvas, 20 1/4 x 30 1/4 inches (51.44 x 76.84 cm)
The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Purchase: acquired through the generosity of the Union Pacific Foundation, F86-19

I’ve always been a fan of Remington’s grisaille illustrations, which tend to be more lively in composition than his larger paintings in full-color. While generally considered a conservative figure, Remington was a master of boldly irregular arrangements, of a sort that probably ultimately owe a debt to Japanese prints. This was purchased with a fund for western art provided by the Union Pacific Foundation and provides a good example of the sort of masculine, somewhat grisly subject matter of Remington at his best.
