Fitz Henry Lane (American, 1804-1865)
Harbor of Boston, with the City in the Distance, c. 1846-1847
Oil on canvas, 17 x 27 in. (43.2 x 68.6 cm.)
The Cleveland Museum of Art, Leonard C. Hanna, Jr. Fund and partial gift of Travers Newton, Joanna Newton Riccardi and Georgia Newton Pulos 2004.35

Getting a major Lane seascape for Cleveland was one of my first priorities, and wasn’t easy since they’ve become costly and there aren’t many of them left. This wonderful early view of Boston was purchased directly from the descendants of its first owner: Dr. Armsby of Albany, New York, who purchased it directly from Lane.
